GUNTUR: Students pursuing technical courses should give priority to research in core areas, Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas has said. "Unfortunately, most of the students opt for jobs soon after completion of their courses," he said at the anniversary celebrations of R.V.R & J.C. Engineering College at Chowdavaram on Friday. Educational institutions should not act as mere job-providing centres.
Quality centres
The colleges should give equal importance to research and set up quality centres on campuses, he said. College managements should provide infrastructure facilities for undertaking research in core areas and students opting for research should be given stipend, he mooted. The Vice-Chancellor inaugurated a poor and merit scholarship fund and gave away cheques of Rs.10,000 each to 74 students. College chairman K. Basavapunnaih, secretary and correspondent M. Gopalakrishna said that the fund was set up to provide financial assistance to 100 poor and meritorious students every year. College principal P.S. Shankara Rao said that 262 final year students were placed in 30 firms.
