Statement sought on Pune raids

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Raids by Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate officials on a Pune stud farm owner upset business schedule of the Lok Sabha on Friday, with the Opposition demanding a statement from Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. The Minister, however, did not oblige.

Though all parties had agreed to dispense with the zero hour to allow time for discussion on the Railway budget, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deputy leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra insisted on raising the issue after question hour. Since Mr. Malhotra insisted on bringing up the matter, the Speaker allowed other members, who had given notice for zero hour, to put up their issues. This led tofurther uproar as Congress member Madhusudhan Mistry drew attention of the House to police lathicharge on a Dalit rally in Gandhinagar. When BJP protested, Mr. Chatterjee said, "You did not stick to the decision to take up Railway budget after question hour. Now that I have let you raise an issue, others too will have to be allowed."
