Move to get lockers opened

PUNE/MUMBAI: Officials of the Income-Tax and Enforcement Directorate are preparing to get the Swiss bank lockers of the Pune horse owner opened amid allegations of money laundering against him.

Sources in IT and ED departments, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the horse owner's financial transactions could be spread over a couple of countries.

Denying media reports that the person had indulged in money laundering to the tune of Rs.35,000 crore, Central Board of Direct Taxes spokesperson A.K. Sinha said the "figures were nowhere near those mentioned in the media. There is no question of any political party or politician's name coming up in the investigations so far. It is all purely a flight of imagination."

He said some cross-border transactions had come to light like in some export related matter and it would take time to "get at the truth." The horse owner's lawyer said he had no Swiss bank account and his business rivals could be behind them. — PTI
