``Border dispute can be solved through consensus''

CHENNAI: Gao Junliang, Vice-Minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said on Friday that the border dispute between India and China could be solved ``through consensus.''

He was responding to remarks on the boundary dispute made by N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , at an interaction at the newspaper office. Mr. Ram said this was the only issue between the two countries and it could be solved through mutual accommodation.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Gao said: ``I want to especially point out that The Hindu has played a very important role in promoting bilateral ties between China and India.'' The newspaper is, was and will be a bridge of friendship between China and India, he added.

On his first visit to India, Mr. Gao said his aim was to learn from India. ``I think Tamil Nadu is a very beautiful and prosperous State. The IT industry, the automobile industry as well as the tourism industry are booming in your State. What moves me most is that I can see that people here are very hardworking and full of wisdom.''

The six-member goodwill delegation that accompanied the Vice-Minister held discussions with the State Committee leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and also visited the offices of Sun TV.

The others in the delegation are He Jun, Vice Secretary-General, International Department of the CPC Central Committee; Jia Yuchuan, Deputy Director-General of Policy Research Office, Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee; Du Xiaolin, Deputy Director, International Department of the CPC Central Committee; Yang Bo, staff member of the General Office, Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee; Dai Yuanyuan, Interpreter, International Department of the CPC Central Committee, and You Ningge, Political Consul, Embassy of China, New Delhi.
