Special Correspondent
Puducherry: Secretary of the Communist Party of India here N. Kalainathan has said that it is a matter of concern that the Government has not recruited enough policemen in keeping with the rise in population and emerging law and order situation. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Kalainathan said that while the strength of higher officials had been increasing, there was no corresponding increase in personnel at the lower rung. He said there was a shortage of vehicles for patrolling. Stating that the department should keep close vigil on the influx of "suspects and criminals" from other States, he said want of sufficient force had been contributing largely to the rise in crimes here. Welfare measures for police personnel should also be evolved, he said. Announcing the decisions taken at the recent meeting of the party, he said that the party would hold a public meeting on Saturday to protest the unchecked rise in prices of essential commodities. Forests and Housing Minister of Kerala P. Viswam and Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu K. Subbarayan would address the meeting. Demonstrations would be held in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam at later dates, he added.
