SHIMOGA: Five sculptors were honoured by the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy with its awards for 2006 at a function at the Kuvempu Rang Mandir here on Friday. Those who received the honours are S. Shanaranarayanacharya, Bheemanna Monappa Kumbar, Ganapathi Manjunath Shetti Gudigar, S. Mariswamy and M.S. Umesh. Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, who was the chief guest, honoured the sculptors with the awards containing a cash award of Rs. 5000 each, a shawl, garland and a citation. He said he was happy to see sculptors being recognised for their efforts to keep ancient art forms intact. Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara said it was because of an inner urge for excellence, sculptors could bring out such marvellous art pieces. He suggested that Heritage Material Science be introduced to protect and promote sculpture using modern equipment. Writer Na. D'Souza spoke. Academy president Venkatachalapathy presided over the function. Academy registrar N. Padmajakumari welcomed the gathering.
