Redistribution of some Lok Sabha seats likely

HYDERABAD: Chairman of the Delimitation Commission Kuldeep Singh, has indicated that some of the Lok Sabha seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes in Andhra Pradesh , which fall into clusters or contiguous belts, would be redistributed.

After conclusion of a public hearing on the Commission's proposals for Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts here on Friday, Justice Kuldeep Singh told reporters that the Commission would consider constituencies with the next highest percentage of SC population to replace the ones mooted in the draft proposals.

Karimnagar, Warangal and Ramagundem had been proposed as the Lok Sabha segments reserved for SCs, but the Commission could now reserve Chevella in Ranga Reddy district and, in addition, retain Nagarkurnool in Mahabubagar district. Similarly, Gudur could now become the new Lok Sabha seat reserved for SCs instead of Tirupati.

Contiguous segments

A similar problem has arisen in Assembly constituencies in three coastal Andhra districts. Tiruvur, Nandigama and Nuzvid in Krishna district, Santanuthalapadu, Addanki and Kondapi in Prakasam district and Amalapuram, Razole and Allavaram in East Godavari districts are the contiguous segments. The Commission is likely to take a re-look at these constituencies too.

Earlier, the Commission's proceedings were marred by slogan-shouting youth demanding creation of Korutla Assembly segment in Karimnagar district in place of the proposed Dharmapuri constituency.

A good number of people had converged at the venue to press the demand. Speakers including MLAs T. Jeevan Reddy, D. Sridhar Babu, J. Ratnakar Rao (all Congress) and E. Rajender (TRS), besides municipal councillors voiced their support.
