Mattek moves up

INDIAN WELLS: Bethanie Mattek beat former top-10 player Brenda Schultz-McCarthy 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the Pacific Life Open here on Thursday.

The 36-year-old Schultz-McCarthy, who clocked the WTA Tour's fastest serve last year, lost five of her seven service games and committed nine double faults.

Elena Likhovtseva, unseeded at Indian Wells for the first time since 1999, dispatched Japan's Akiko Morigami 6-3, 6-2 while Anastassia Rodionova won her opener against Emma Laine of Finland 6-1, 6-4.

Australia's Alicia Molik won her seventh straight tournament opener this year when she defeated Aravane Rezai of France 6-2, 6-4.

The other first round winners included Gisela Dulko of Argentina, Yuan Meng of China, Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria and Vasilisa Bardina of Russia.
