Chennai: A three-year ban is likely to be slapped on players found guilty of assault and misbehaviour against umpire Satinder Sharma in the PHL 2007 final at Chandigarh on Monday. The indications are that at least three or four players have been identified from video replays. The Indian Hockey Federation is expected to come out with the names in the next few days. The final of the Premier Hockey League on March 5 was marred by the attack by Sher-e-Jalandhar players on Satinder, an umpire in the Olympic and World Cup panel of the International Hockey Federation. Sher-e-Jalandhar lost the final 2-3 to Orissa Steelers, the match-winner converted by skipper Dilip Tirkey off a penalty corner raising a controversy and leading to ugly scenes. The match had to be stopped for over 25 minutes and Satinder had to be replaced before the match was resumed. The IHF seems to have lost no time in investigating the sordid episode. The findings, along with the report of the Tournament Director Shakeel Quereshi, are with the chairman of the disciplinary panel, Dinesh Vajpayee of West Bengal. The committee will scrutinise the report and give its seal of approval, paving the way for IHF to officially announce the ban on a few players for the next three years. There is no indication of anyone getting a life ban.
