Air-India rallies to win

NEW DELHI: Len Aiyappa demonstrated customary efficiency in executing set-piece drills as Air-India defeated Punjab and Sind Bank 3-1 in a Group II quarterfinal league match of the third all-India Oriental Bank Maharaja Ranjit Singh hockey tournament on Friday.

Parminder Singh's sharp deflection put the bank team ahead in the ninth minute. About 10 minutes later, Air-India's Aiyappa equalised. It consolidated its position thanks to a smart reverse hit by Mandeep Antil in the 22nd minute. Air-India slotted its third goal in the second minute of the second half, as Aiyappa converted the second penalty corner.

In Group `I' Indian Airlines beat Border Security Force 3-1.

Indian Airlines went ahead in the 30th minute through Bimal Lakra. BSF restored parity through Peter Tirkey.

Dhanraj Pillay and Arjun Halappa combined to put through Birender Lakra who provided the finishing. Pillay slotted the third goal 10 minutes before close. — Special Correspondent
