KOCHI: A factory for production of "innovative" ingredients for processed food was inaugurated on March 9 at Taste Park, Vadavucode, near Kolencherry. The project, costing Rs.22 crore, is a joint venture of the Kochi-based Synthite Industrial Chemicals Ltd. and an Austrian company, Omega Flavours Technology Private Ltd. The special ingredients manufactured at the new centre, Symega Savoury Technology Private Ltd., include spice blends, seasonings and compound flavours. The research and development works undertaken at the unit would enable the company to make speciality ingredients by combining traditional flavour profiles with innovations, said Christoph Langwallner, managing director of the company. The company works closely with the customer for tailor-made solutions and modification of products, he said. The new unit has a capacity of 8,000 tonnes per annum. The capacity would be augmented to 20,000 tonnes per annum in the next five years, said George Paul, Director of Synthite Industrial Chemicals Ltd. The R&D operations of the new unit had started in mid-2006, he said. The design of the plant was done by experts in the food processing industry in Europe and India. The factory is spread over 12,500 sq.ft. area, according to him. Synthite, started in 1972, shares 45 % of India's exports in the oleoresin market. The company, employing over 1,200 persons, has over 500 products and a business of Rs. 300 crore. Omega, started in 1994, is a seasoning house in Eastern Europe and has hundreds of products to its credit, according to Erich Zirm, managing director of the Omega Group of companies. The company will strengthen the oleoresin and spice industry in Kerala by adding value to the products. The motivation to come to Kerala is the rich source of the raw materials, he said. Symega has 39 employees on its rolls.
