M. Krishnasswamy
CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has said it would not tolerate a culture of arms in Tamil Nadu and it would stoutly oppose any move to give room to violence in the State. Welcoming the State Government's measures to crack down on the supporters of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the State, TNCC president M. Krishnasswamy said the peace prevailing in the State should not be disturbed by the "unlawful activities" of LTTE supporters. He congratulated the State police for arresting 12 LTTE supporters and detaining them under the Goondas Act. Speaking to newsmen here on Friday, the TNCC president said it was not proper for the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa to demand a gazette notification of the Cauvery Tribunal Award till issues detrimental to Tamil Nadu were settled. There was nothing wrong in convening an all-party meeting to decide what to do next in view of Karnataka's move to file a suit in the Supreme Court. The TNCC would celebrate the centenary of the "Satyagraha struggle" launched by Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa on September 11, 1906 at the party headquarters Sathyamurthi Bhavan on March 18. M.Veerappa Moily, who is in charge of party affairs in the State, would release a book on the Satyagraha movement. Union Minister G.K. Vasan will receive the first copy.
Photo exhibition
A photo exhibition on the movement will be opened by Union Minister Ambika Soni, and Union Minister E.V.K.S.Elangovan and party MPs and MLAs will participate in the function. The party will also organise a meeting to explain the salient features of the Union Budget here on March 11; Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will address the meeting. On the appointment of State-level and district level office-bearers for the party, Mr. Krishnasswamy said he would discuss the issue with Mr. Moily during his visit to the State on March 18. On the party's demand to share power in Tamil Nadu, he said the demand had not been dropped. The party workers were for sharing power and their feeling had been conveyed to the party high command. It was for the high command and Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi to take a decision.
