Government criticised on drought relief

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Congress leaders came down heavily on the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government for its failure on all fronts and accused it of showing scant respect to the Constitution.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, B.K. Chandrashekar, former Minister, and Basavaraj Rayareddy, MLA, said the State Government had failed to tackle the drought situation in the State and had not released funds to provide relief to people in drought-affected areas.

According to them, the State Government had released Rs. 351 crore out of the total Rs. 480 crore (including the value of foodgrain) released by the Union Government. But the expenditure was only Rs. 200 crore. Funds had not been released from the exchequer and no allocation was made for fodder, they said.

Mr. Chandrashekar accused the Janata Dal (S) of giving power and resources to the BJP which led to communal violence in Mangalore and the Sangh Parivar gaining an upper hand there.
