Rs. 10 crores earmarked for sports projects

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will earmark Rs. 10 crores for initiating new facilities and for completing the sports centres under construction during the next financial year.

Presenting the State Budget for 2007-08 in the Kerala Assembly on Friday, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said the State sports super bumper lottery was introduced to create a quantum jump in sports facilities across the State. But it was not a success as expected.

The Government has decided to actively proceed with the aim of conducting the 2010 National Games in Kerala.

Of the Rs. 10 crores allotted, Rs. 25 lakhs will be released to the Usha School of Athletics for laying a synthetic track.

The grant-in-aid provision for the Kerala Sports Council has, however, been brought down to Rs. 3 crores for Plan schemes as against Rs.7.50 crores in 2006-07. The allocation for non-Plan schemes for the KSC will be 3.60 crores, marginally up from Rs.2.98 crores set apart last time.
