Coimbatore: A kumki (tamed and trained elephant) of the forest department was treated for multiple sprains and resultant swelling on its legs besides diarrhoea at Chincona near Valparai. Officials of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary had deployed two kumki elephants, Pallavan and Bharani (from its camp in Top Slip), at Valparai following frequent complaints of pachyderms straying into human habitations. Under instructions from Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle, P.C. Tyagi, Wildlife Warden K.R. Varadharajan had been monitoring these operations. As Pallavan was reported ailing, forest veterinarian N.S. Manoharan along with a team of officials treated the pachyderm. Mr. Manoharan also sighted a male Lion Tailed Macaque in the Valparai forest area that was said to be suffering from a tumour in its right eye.
The officials are discussing the modalities for catching the animal and to operate upon it.
Gaur found dead
A 10-year-old male Indian Gaur (bison) was found dead in Anaikatti area of the Coimbatore range of the reserve forests on Thursday. Clinical observation indicated that the death could be due to lung infection.
Deer dead
A five-year-old spotted deer died of complications during pregnancy in Palladam area on Friday. It was one of the deer that had strayed into human habitations, forest officials said.
