UFBC demands pension scheme

  • Mass rally in Delhi slated for March 12
  • Centralised demonstrations on March 21, 27

HYDERABAD: Banking operations across 65,000 branches of the public sector banks are likely to be affected following a call for three-day countrywide strike given by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from March 28.

The UFBU, an umbrella organisation comprising nine unions with a membership of over 8-lakh employees is demanding extension of pension scheme to employees, compassionate appointments, recruitment of staff and opposition to outsourcing of bank functions.

The strike will commence on March 28 and if the demands are not conceded, then the unions have decided to launch indefinite strike from May 3. The employees have decided to participate in a mass rally in Delhi on March 12. Centralised demonstrations will be held bank-wise on March 21 and 27. The UFBU Andhra Pradesh State unit convenor K. Ramakoteswara Rao at a press conference on Friday said that the unions were forced to go on strike, as the Indian Banks Association had not acceded the demand to extend pension scheme to all employees. He opposed withdrawal of guidelines for introduction of `Defined Contributory Pension Scheme'. .
