KOLLAM: President of the Kollam west block Congress committee P.R. Pratapachandran has submitted a petition before the Ombudsman for the Local Self-Government Institutions praying to order a Vigilance probe into the alleged graft in the contract for renovating the C. Keshavan Memorial Town Hall here. A recent audit report of the Accountant General cited graft by the Kollam Municipal Corporation in the award of the renovation contract to the public sector Kerala Electricals Limited (KEL). Mayor N. Padmalochanan dismissed the findings of the audit report as ``baseless and politically motivated.'' In his petition, Mr. Pratapachandran said though the contract was awarded to KEL for a hefty sum and that too by violating rules, the KEL sub contracted a major portion of the work for very low rates to private agencies. He alleged that the provisions in the preparation of proper estimates of work, its execution, supervision and expenditure were not adhered to in the manner prescribed.
