Beauty contest with a difference

  • About 100 cows walk down before a jury
  • The event being organised for the last 11 years

    BHUBANESWAR: Though Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachhan's attempt to present a cow as a `beauty queen' in an advertisement was only aimed at to titillate television viewers, it, however, came true in the capital city here on Friday.

    About 100 cows were made to walk down before a jury comprising veterinary doctors who awarded marks to select healthy and beautiful cows. These animals, mostly herded from different localities in and around Bhubaneswar, were adjudged winner in different categories. he competition was organised by `Go-Pradarshani and Go-Puja Ayojana (GPGPA) Committee' with support from the State Animal and Husbandry Department and veterinary wing of Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) near Nayapalli in the city.

    "The foremost standard of a cow is its capacity to produce milk and its external contour. Doctors can easily measure milk-producing capacity by examining cows' veins," Chief District Veterinary Officer of Khurda S C Panda said.

    Pointing out that shining of skins of cows would be another important factor, Dr. Panda said this would give jury members a fair idea how the animal had been reared. The other criteria are the way cows take command from their owners and how they stroll.

    Unique competition

    Similarly, the calves were chosen on basis of their agility and health condition, he said. Doctors of Animal and Husbandry were present on the occasion to extend medicinal support for these animals.

    Convenor of the unique competition Sanatan Behera claimed the GPGPA had been organising the event for the last 11 years. "Our sole aim to encourage people to keep cows, which will bring prosperous for them," he said.
