PLANNING THINGS: CPI(M) leader Nomula Narsimhaiah and TRS leaders Nayani Narasimha Reddy and G. Vijayarama Rao talking to TDP leader T. Devender Goud in the Assembly on Friday.
HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) have suggested that either the Congress or the Telugu Desam withdraw one of their contestants from the Council poll to ensure unanimous election of other candidates in the fray. Saturday is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. The Congress has fielded 20 candidates and the TDP five, one more each than their actual strength in the Assembly in the hope that the second and subsequent preferential votes can help clinch the result in favour of their respective candidates. As a result, 32 nominations have been filed against the 31 vacancies, making the election inevitable.
Horse-trading
CPI (M) floor leader Nomula Narsimhaiah and TRS floor leader G. Vijayarama Rao met TD Legislature Party deputy leader T. Devender Goud on Friday asking his party to withdraw its fifth candidate. They said a contest would give scope for horse-trading that, in turn, would send a wrong signal to the people. They said in the light of the reports about the parties' efforts to secure the support of elected representatives of local bodies by `all means', a contest for the MLAs quota seats would give a `bad name' for the legislators. Moreover, the Congress that had the backing of the independents and small political parties had an edge while the TDP would require more number of votes for ensuring its candidate's victory, they said.
Goud refuses?
Mr. Goud reportedly turned down the request on the ground that the Congress, which was set to secure 19 seats, could afford to ask its 20th candidate to withdraw.
