CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) women's wing took out a big rally in the city on Friday. A large number of women from various parts of Chennai participated in the rally, which commenced from Munro Statue and culminated near the State Guest House on Wallajah Road. DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi witnessed the rally from a specially erected dais.
Placards
The cadres held placards urging the Central Government to implement 33 per cent reservation. They also commended the welfare schemes implemented for the weaker sections by the State Government.
Folk dances
Apart from displaying slogans, the marchers organised folk arts and dances. A group of women dressed in the colours of party flag came on horses, while about 400 women dressed in blue colour saris carried yellow umbrellas. Among others who witnessed the rally were senior Ministers K. Anbazhagan, Arcot N. Veerasamy, Durai Murugan, M.K. Stalin, K. Ponmudy and Parithi Ilamvazhuthi. The Chief Minister's daughter and poet, Kanimozhi, Ministers Poongothai and Tamizharasi, and former minister Sargunapandian accompanied the procession. The rally, which commenced around 5 p.m. ended at 7.30 p.m. Police had made elaborate security arrangements.
