CHENNAI: All India Radio on Friday released the "Akashvani Sangeet" series CDs and cassettes of eminent Carnatic musicians T.R. Mahalingam (flute) and Maharajapuram V. Santhanam (vocal). N. Murali, President, Music Academy, and Managing Director of The Hindu , released the volumes; the first copies were received by N. Ramani, national artiste. Mr. Murali hailed AIR for its contribution over the years to the cause of Carnatic music. He said Mahalingam stood out with his sublime music and vocalised flute. Maharajapuram Santhanam's music had an appeal, which went beyond national boundaries. The musician knew how to create a rapport with the audience. He had a wonderful ability to make his music appeal to a wide cross section of people. Both had made Carnatic music proud, and All India Radio had unlocked its priceless treasure in the form of archives in making available the volumes with AIR, Chennai, playing a big role in it. Director-General of AIR Brijeshwar Singh said the two distinguished artistes enjoyed unparalleled fame not only in South India, but also in the North. Mahalingam developed a new style of playing the flute. He had a fan following cutting across age groups. Maharajapuram Santhanam's deep tone and smoothness of voice had parallels in Hindustani music. [The recordings of T.R. Mahalingam were done in 1962, and that of Maharajapuram Santhanam during 1976 and 1982, according to the Station Director, K. Srinivasaragavan.] Mr. Singh honoured legal heirs of both the artists on the occasion. G. Jayalal, Deputy Director-General (Southern Region-1) AIR and Karuna Srivastava, Deputy Director-General (in charge), Transcription and Programme Exchange Service, AIR, New Delhi, were among those who spoke.
