KOCHI: Effective involvement of various service and welfare organisations such as Kudumbasree is required for implementation of the Domestic Violence (Prevention) Act 2005. This was one of the major observations that emerged at a workshop on `Domestic Violence (Prevention) Act 2005 and supplementary rules made in 2006' held here on Friday. The workshop was organised jointly by the Social Welfare Department and the Cultural Academy for Peace. A group discussion held at the end of the workshop called for active participation of family members and positive participation of media and religious circles for effective dissemination of information regarding the Act. It also called for more awareness classes on new legislations. These observations would be forwarded to the State Government, said C.M. Yoshith, Regional Assistant Director, Social Welfare Department. Earlier, inaugurating the workshop, former Kerala High Court judge K. Sukumaran said the Act had covered all aspects of domestic violence and would be more effective in northern parts of the country where the societal status of women was still problematic. In her keynote address, R. Sreelekha, Inspector General of Police, said the need for a new law denoted that women still faced problem in society. There were many laws, but they were not being brought into practice effectively, she said. Mayor Mercy Williams presided and Beena Sebastian, chairperson, Cultural Academy for Peace, introduced the subject of the workshop. Sony Komath, president, Janadhipatya Mahila Association; Valsala Prasannakumar, district general secretary, Mahila Congress; and Leela Menon, veteran journalist, spoke. Neena Jacob, IMG, Ernakulam, and lawyers Lali Vincent and Lekha Suresh presented papers on various aspects of the law.
