Tension at mosque

Kochi: Madeena Masjid at Pulleppady witnessed tense moments when groups belonging to rival imams clashed over the right for leading prayer. According to the Ernakulam Town Central Police, the governing body of the Masjid had appointed a new imam. However, the existing imam and his supporters stopped the new imam from leading the prayer on Friday morning. The police intervened and dispersed the crowd that had resorted to fisticuffs. Cases were registered on charges of rioting. - Staff Reporter

Women's day

Kochi: International Women's Day was observed at the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory here. Jayasree Sukumaran, former collegiate director, delivered a talk on the role of mother in moulding a family. The Ladies Forum of Defence Research Officers Mess and Institute also organised a talk on women empowerment. Shoba Koshi, Postmaster General, Ernakulam, delivered the lecture. - Staff Reporter

IOC contract workers strike work

Kochi: The contract workers employed by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in the State began a strike protesting against the move to dismiss 45 workers of the Cheralai LPG plant. In a statement issued on Friday, Kerala Petroleum and Gas Workers Union working president B. Balagopalan demanded that the workers be reinstated. - Staff Reporter

Bank employees plan strike

KOCHI: The United Forum of Bank Unions will strike work from March 28 to 30 to press their various demands. State convener of the forum V.J. Johny said on Friday that bank employees across the country would go on an indefinite strike from May 3 if the Government failed to address various issues in the banking sector through talks. The demands included granting permission for pension option, new recruitment and cancellation of outsourcing policy in the banking sector. - Staff Reporter
