NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old promoter of an unauthorised Bhojpuri television channel -- Poorva TV -- has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police for allegedly cheating a company by offering a lucrative business opportunity. Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Prabhakar said the accused Gaurav Sharma, a Lucknow University graduate, approached Saurav Chatterjee, Director of Planman Consultants India (P) Limited, promising Rs.36 crore business contract relating to data conversion. The accused falsely introduced himself to be the Indian agent of NV Tech Media Company based in the UK and a managing director of a publishing company. Gaurav, who had learnt about wireless telecommunication through Internet, impressed Mr. Chatterjee with his expertise and gained his trust. He then demanded Rs.25 lakhs as contract procurement fee and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the company on June 17, 2004. Later he withdrew the entire amount of around Rs.1 crore from all the banks and went underground. On receiving the complaint, when the police could not locate him, a decoy e-mail offering a lucrative business opportunity was sent to the accused. He immediately responded to the e-mail and details about his last presence were ascertained with the help of the service provider. He was arrested in Lucknow on March 3 this year.
