Control inflation or step down: BJP

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Bharatiya Janata Party members staged a demonstration here on Saturday calling the Central and State Governments to either control inflation or step down.

Speaking at the human chain formed by the party's women's wing, BJP State president L. Ganesan said the 2007 Union Budget had "failed to tackle the rising prices of essential commodities." "Women are directly affected by the spiralling costs of essential products."

Mr. Ganesan said the situation had deteriorated after the United Progressive Alliance Government assumed office. While LPG connections were readily available during the National Democratic Alliance regime, people had to wait for long periods now. "Families cannot have two cylinders at the same time, and they have to wait for long periods for obtaining a refill. If this situation persists, women might have to once again use firewood for cooking," he said.
