`Develop cyber security system'

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Union and State Governments have a major responsibility to develop and implement a cyber security system in the country. This view was voiced by the delegates of a two-day national conference on cyber security organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Software Technology Parks of India and Computer Society of India, here on Friday.

Vice-chairperson of the steering committee of the conference C. Rao Kasarabada emphasised the need for evolving a sound security solution for protecting cyber systems such as ATM, website, information folders and even communication through mobile phones.

Cyber security experts presented technical papers relating to cyber technology such as network security and applications, and cyber security policies and practices.

In their paper "Cyber security — a national perspective," S. M. Bhaskar and Tanay Bhattacharya of the Delhi-based National Technical Research Organisation emphasised the role of the Centre in containing increasing cyber crime. The paper argued that with the explosion of Internet technologies "secure cyberspace is meant to provide a framework for protecting the infrastructure essential to our economy, security and way of life."

Referring to the increasing range and role of cyber technology, the paper said: " In peacetime our enemies may conduct espionage on our Government, university research centres and private companies. They may also seek to prepare for cyber strikes during a confrontation by mapping the nation's information system, identifying key targets and lacing our infrastructure with backdoors and other means of access," it said.
