Coimbatore: Formation of the Salem Railway division would not affect the revenue or growth of the Palakkad division, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said here on Saturday. He was talking to reporters after inaugurating a seventh food plaza at the Coimbatore junction. On the delay in formation and functioning of the Salem Division, Mr. Velu said Rs. 3 crore had already been allotted for preliminary works and the division had started functioning. Employees transferred from the Palakkad Division had been relieved as per the headquarter orders, the Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, A.K. Harit, pointed out.To put in place complete logistics it would take some more time and the new division and its jurisdictions remained the same, Mr. Velu said. On food plazas, Mr. Velu said it was proposed to open 50 food plazas in major railway stations. Already 38 such plazas had been opened. Similar plazas would also be opened at Tambaram, Katpadi, Tirunelveli, Salem and Erode. Bigger scale Cell Kitchens to take care of vending on platforms and train side were being planned at Chennai, Jolarpettai, Arakkonam, Madurai, Erode, Villuppuram, Virudhunagar, Chengalpattu, Katpadi, Salem, Dindigul, Chennai Egmore and Tiruchi. In addition, efforts were on to start 100 budget class hotels to be run by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). These hotels would provide affordable accommodation to middle-income group travellers. Contracts had already been awarded for such hotels at Madurai, Kanyakumari, Rameswaram and Udhgamandalam, while tenders had been floated for places such as Coimbatore, Chennai Egmore, Chennai Central, Mangalore and Puducherry.
