KOCHI: Combining nicely and keeping the deadly Shijas Mohammed at bay with a solid block, Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, defeated Indian Navy 3-1 in the National Volleyball League's final phase at the BPCL courts here on Saturday. Captain P. Sivabalan, J. Nadarajan, who repeatedly targeted the edge of the block for his smashes, and Karthikeyan impressed for the Chennai side. For Navy, with Shijas often silenced by the IOB's Jenson Varghese and Nadarajan, Rajil Mathew came up with an outstanding display. Despite the victory, its second from four encounters, IOB's chances of taking the men's title look very slim.
Springing a surprise
The IOB was involved in some hot action on Friday night. It surprised the in-form Southern Railway 3-1, while defending champion BPCL, the host, suffered a straight-set loss against Haryana's HSIDC which opened up the title race.
The results: Men: IOB, Chennai bt Indian Navy 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 32-30. Women: KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram bt Western Railway, Mumbai 22-25, 25-16, 25-9, 15-25, 15-10. Friday's late matches: IOB, Chennai bt Southern Railway, Chennai 25-17, 18-25, 27-25, 26-24; HSIDC, Haryana bt BPCL, Kochi 25-22, 31-29, 25-18; Indian Navy bt Cochin Port Trust 25-17, 25-22, 25-15.
