Bus operators oppose directive on speed governors

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Private Bus Operators' Federation has opposed the directive of the Transport Commissioner to install speed governors in all stage carriers and heavy vehicles plying in the State before April 15.

At a press conference here on Saturday, A.K. Abdulla, president of the federation, and Lawrence Babu, general secretary, said the State Government had failed to keep the promise that an Ordinance would be promulgated to bypass the Supreme Court directive to install speed governors.

The directive from the commissioner comes in the wake of the apex court's directive to the State to ensure that all stage carriers and heavy vehicles install speed governors before April 28.

The federation leaders said the commissioner's directive not to clear the documents of stage carriers and heavy vehicles that did not have speed governors had pushed the private bus industry into a crisis. "A big lobby is working to capture the market for speed governors and many of the gadgets supplied by these firms are not working," they said. The federation demanded that the Government take steps to manufacture speed governors in public sector units and sell them at cheap rates.

The federation also refuted the claim that installing speed governors in heavy vehicles would bring down the mounting accident rate in the State. Of the 34-lakh vehicles plying in Kerala, only around one lakh were stage carriers and heavy vehicles.

Mr. Babu said the Government should take steps to allow stage carriers to ply without speed governors till April 28, the deadline set by the apex court.
