P.K. Kunhalikutty
KANNUR: P.K. Kunhalikutty, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and former Minister, has said that the political cause of uplift of minority communities upheld by the party has led to the progress of Muslims in the State. At a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the minorities in the State, especially Muslims, could benefit from the progress of the State because of the principle of "unity of backward and minority communities" upheld by the league. While the "experiment" succeeded in the State, the condition of minorities in other parts of the country, including West Bengal, was pathetic as brought out by the Sachar Committee report, he said. Referring to the findings of the committee that Kerala was an exception as far as the state of the Muslims was concerned, he said the panel report's disclosure of the condition of Muslims in West Bengal exposed the hollowness of those who claimed to be protectors of the community. "Kerala has become a model because of the role of the IUML,'' Mr. Kunhalikutty said. Fascist and extremist forces were not able to take roots in the State thanks to the balanced stand of the league. Even during the highly charged post-Babri-Masjid demolition days, the league had upheld its commitment to secularism. The party would continue to oppose communalism and extremism. Some Muslim organisations were using anti-U.S. sentiments to mobilise the youth to their extremist propaganda, he said. The IUML's campaigns had been focussing on the need for protecting peace and harmony in the country.
