Extortion bid foiled; two held

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Two persons, including an Army absconder, have been arrested by the East Delhi police for allegedly trying to extort Rs. 3 crore from a businessman. The police have also seized a car that purportedly had a plate in the name of "Vice-Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)".

According to the police, an unidentified person had fired at the car of a New Ashok Nagar-based businessman at Noida in Uttar Pradesh on March 5 following which a case was registered at the Sector 20 police station in Noida.

Meanwhile, the businessman continued to get calls on his mobile phone in which the callers demanded Rs. 3 crore for his safety. Another case was registered at the New Ashok Nagar police station and investigations were handed over to the Special Staff of the East Delhi police.

Led by Inspector Rakesh Dixit, the police team traced the calls of the extortionists to public booths at several places including Ballabhgarh, Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana and Ghaziabad, Noida, Vaishali, Meerut and Dadri in UP.

Finally on Friday the extortionists asked the businessman to come near Apollo Hospital in Sarita Vihar to hand over the money. The police laid a trap and managed to arrest two of the four persons present at the spot to collect the extortion amount.

Those arrested have been identified as Shailender Kumar alias Fauzi and Sanjeev Kumar. The police claim to have recovered a country-made revolver and 10 live cartridges from them. The two persons who escaped have been identified as Ajay Sharma, a property dealer from Sarita Vihar, and Pradeep Kumar. A Maruti Zen car bearing the name plate of NHRC Vice-Chairman was also seized at the spot. The police said Shailender Kumar, a resident of Panipat in Haryana, had worked in the Army for five years since 2002. He had left his posting in Jammu and Kashmir following altercation with his senior officers and returned home.
