Amarinder seeks transfer of Badal's case

Patiala: Hours after Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced he will not quit in connection with a Rs. 78-crore disproportionate assets case, his predecessor Amarinder Singh on Saturday said he will seek transfer of the trial to a court outside the State.

"I will soon move a petition in the Supreme Court requesting that the trial of the case against Badal and his family members be shifted to a court outside Punjab as a fair trial is not possible under the present dispensation," Mr. Singh, a bete noire of Mr. Badal, told reporters at his Moti Bagh Palace during a tea party hosted for the public.

Seeking Mr. Badal's resignation on moral grounds, he however said the people of Punjab "will throw him out in due course of time."

Mr. Badal had earlier ruled out his resignation in New Delhi. Mr. Amarinder Singh said the Congress would demand that the re-investigation in this case be done by the CBI and not by the Vigilance Bureau. "The matter will be taken up after due consultation with lawyers."

Mr. Singh alleged that MP Sukhbir Singh Badal, son of the SAD chief, has been running a proxy rule with the BJP controlling the situation. — PTI
