Government to part-fund MRTS extension

S. Vydhianathan

It will bear two-thirds of the cost of the Velachery-St. Thomas Mount project

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has agreed to part-finance the extension of the Mass Rapid Transit System from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount over the length of 5 km.

The cost of extending the system over the 5-km stretch will be Rs. 495 crore, of which the State will bear two-thirds. The Railways will meet the rest.

The Southern Railway administration has finalised the alignment of the track, which will be on an elevated structure with the sub-structure beams coming up on the median. There is no need to acquire land for a major stretch of the project as the track will run along the middle of the road. There is a 400-metre stretch ahead of St. Thomas Mount where buildings stand in the way. If prices at the market value are paid to the building owners, there will not be any problem in acquiring the land.

The St. Thomas Mount station will be an elevated structure with foot over bridge connections to the Tambaram-Beach suburban lines.
