Bharathiar University to allot land for `Techno Park'

Staff Reporter

It is already in touch with leading IT companies, says VC "It will be `mutually beneficial' for companies and students regarding placement"

MADURAI : Catching on the information technology boom in Coimbatore region, Bharathiar University has decided to allot 100 acres of its land to establish a `Techno Park' for software companies to set up research facility.

"The varsity is already in touch with leading IT companies and the idea is received well among the software players since it will be a `mutually beneficial' project for companies and students with regard to placement," G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, said here on Saturday.

A draft plan for the park was ready and awaiting clearance from the Syndicate, he added.

As per the proposal, the university would allow companies to have research and development divisions in the park and the fundamental clause of the agreement would be that these companies should train the university students in matters of information technology.

Besides, "our students should get a preferential treatment with regard to placement in those companies," the Vice-Chancellor said.

Another initiative taken up by the university was introduction of technology-oriented courses in arts and science colleges.

He pointed out that leading IT companies were setting up their facilities in the region and the State Government was going ahead with its proposal for establishing a software park.

"We have sufficient land and hence, the idea of a park was thought of. The partnership would be beneficial to our students," Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

The IT major, Tata Consultancy Services, would soon establish a development centre on the varsity campus and negotiations had reached the final stage, he said.
