Key suspect in sensational kidnap cases nabbed at city airport's VIP lounge

  • City police tipped off by Mumbai police
  • Accused person being grilled by police

HYDERABAD: City police achieved a major breakthrough on Saturday when they took into custody a person believed to be behind several sensational kidnaps in the country at Begumpet airport on Saturday.

A team of seven to eight police officers swooped on the most-wanted person operating from Dubai, when he was waiting at the airport's VIP lounge. He was supposed to board a Mumbai-bound flight. On a tip-off from Mumbai police, city police higher-ups spread out a dragnet for him at the airport. A special team of intelligence and city police officials rounded him up before he could notice them.

The man who hails from the city is being grilled. It would not be proper to reveal the name of the person at this stage of investigation, said the police.

It is not yet known why he arrived in the city. His name figured initially in the abduction of a schoolgirl Sumedha, 15, daughter of an industrialist, from Jubilee Hills while she was on the way to school six years ago. At that time, the gang demanded a Rs. 2-crore ransom to set her free.

Police rescued the girl from Zaheerabad later with the arrest of three abductors. The suspect had been absconding since then. Subsequently, he scripted several such kidnaps in Gujarat and Maharashtra, apart from the State, and extorted crores of rupees. In one case under Kidwai police station of Maharashtra, the gang killed a boy even after receiving the ransom amount. Two years ago, the gang abducted a boy Satish from Langer Houz and demanded Rs. 2 crores as ransom. This boy too was rescued by city police.
