Umayanalloor temple fete from Thursday

KOLLAM: The annual festival at the Major Umayanalloor Sree Balasubramanya Swamy Temple will be held from March 15 to 23.

The "aanavaal pidi" ritual in connection with the festival will be held at the temple at 11.30 a.m. on March 21. Devotees run after an elephant and catch its tail, symbolising the childhood pranks between the deities Subramanyam and Ganesha.

Procession

K. Vijayakumar, temple committee president, said here on Sunday that the festival would start with a "thanga angi" (divine ornaments) procession from the Anandavalleshwaram temple, beginning 4 p.m., to reach the Umayanallur temple, via Chinnakada, Pallimukku and Thattamala.

The traditional Thalapoli procession will start from Valliyambalam at 5.30 p.m. and reach the temple at 6.30 p.m. on March 16.

The festival flag will be hoisted after 8.30 p.m. that day.

A Pongala will be held from 6 a.m. on March 18. The "arat ezhunallippu" (procession of the deity) will begin at 4 p.m. on March 23.

Five "Eduppu Kuthitras (figures of horses)," accompanied by tuskers, will be the attraction of the ritual.

Mr. Vijayakumar said the "ashtabandha kalasham" ritual, held every 12 years at the temple, would take place between 10.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. on April 5.
