NAAC team to visit college

Staff Reporter

To consider granting NAAC re-accreditation

KOLLAM: A peer team from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) comprising experts from various disciplines will visit Fatima Mata National College here from Monday to Wednesday.

The visit was part of an exercise to consider granting NAAC re-accreditation to the institution, college Principal Soosamma Kavumpurath said.

The college had been given four-star accreditation by the NAAC in 2001. The University Grants Commission has established the NAAC as an autonomous institution to assure the quality of higher education institutions.

The assessment outcome and accreditation is valid for a period of five years. After that, institutions can volunteer for re-accreditation.

During the visit to Fatima college, the peer team will acquaint itself with the strengths and weaknesses of the college and analyse the mechanisms for quality improvement.

Dr. Kavumpurath said the college, established in 1951, was owned by the diocese of Kollam. With a student strength of 2,373, it offered 21 programmes of study in four research centres and nine postgraduate departments. It had 97 staff members.

The college provided women specific support measures. Accordingly, there was a woman vice-principal, a women's cell, and free computer training for girls.
