Jitendra, Sourav and Anindita make exit

AJMER: Fourth seed G. Jitendra crashed to an unexpected loss against Ranbir Das in the biggest upset on the opening day of the individual events of the AAI-National table tennis championship at the Patel Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

Das, finalist two years ago, won in six games to set up an intriguing battle with defensive campaigner R. Abhishek for a place in the quarterfinals.

Former National champion Soumyadeep Roy survived a match-point in the fifth game against Bhushan Thakur to advance in seven games. Another ex-champion Arup Basak was not so lucky against an in-form Anirban Nandi.

Raman stretched

Another former National champion S. Raman, taken to six games in the opener by young Arunava Ganguly, showed signs of settling down.

The veteran drubbed fellow left-hander and eighth seed Sourav Chakraborty in straight games for a place in the last 16.

He now plays Aniket Koparkar, a trainee of eight-time National champion Kamlesh Mehta.

In the ladies section, Anindita Chakraborty ran out of steam to lose in six games against Sushmita Roy. N. R. Indu, another `Comeback Mom' came back stronger after a testing 4-3 victory over Ashlesh Bodas in the opening round and beat Railways' Sayantika Kundu.
