Unauthorised telecom network busted, one held

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : The police arrested a person on the charges of violating the Indian Telegraph Act.

The police said here on Sunday that based on a complaint from the Assistant Vigilance Officer, BSNL, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran directed the CCB to register a case. Investigations revealed that Selvamani and P. Suresh (37) of Washermenpet, had set up an unauthorised telecom network a few months ago.

Apart from Internet connection, the duo had also installed the voice over internet protocol with which they gained access to international calls, thereby causing revenue loss to the BSNL.

It was found that those who frequently made international calls dialled the local landline number furnished by Selvamani.

While the police produced Suresh before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Egmore, which remanded him to judicial custody, a hunt is on to nab Selvamani, a press note said.
