Good intentions

won't suffice

The news about the pre-paid auto-rickshaw stand in the city brought cheer to people who do a lot of commuting. But the happiness lasted only till one actually experienced the ground reality at the railway station and the bus station. Though the city police commissioner C. V. Anand had a very novel objective in mind while introducing the new system, it has unfortunately failed to take off in a way it was perceived to be. Old habits die hard and so, the auto-rickshaw drivers understandably find it difficult to stop fleecing the passengers. When reminded of the new system, their straight reply is that they have not fully accepted the conditions.

Insufficient grants

Reports indicate that the grants released by the Government for payment of salaries to teachers in aided schools are insufficient to pay their salaries till the month of February 2007. In view of the forthcoming elections to the State Legislative Council, the Government should take immediate steps to ensure release of adequate funds for the purpose. It should also look into the demand to sanction special leave to teachers who want to exercise their franchise in the ensuing elections, slated for March 17, after a gap of two decades.

Dereliction of duty

Traffic constables posted at traffic signals are seldom seen discharging their duties effectively. The chaos on the city roads can easily be attributed to the dereliction of duty on the part of these traffic cops. Heavy vehicles, cars, two-wheelers and pedestrians vying to outsmart one another and two traffic cops engrossed in a heart-to-heart chat on one side of the busy road is a common scenario. They wake up only when a honking vehicle disturbs their conversation or a serious scuffle erupts between road-users. Will the traffic wing of the police department do something to make its personnel alive to the situation?

BSNL-eSeva

linkup needed

eSeva centres across the city have come as a boon to the locals who now do not have to travel all the way to the electricity department and stand in long queues to pay their electricity bills. As part of expanding its area of functioning, these centres began to accept other bills like BSNL landline telephones besides facilities like booking of cinema tickets. But users of BSNL cell phones have no provision to pay their bills at these centres. In view of the large number of its cell phone subscribers, the BSNL should reach an understanding with the eSeva centres to make arrangement for payment of cell phone bills at these centres.

Reaping a profit

Soaring prices of packed and pasteurised milk supplied by co-operative societies has forced many to depend on milk-vendors, who offer milk for Rs. 2 or 3 less than these societies. But hygiene is a major problem with a majority of these vendors who pay little attention to the cleanliness factor. Besides problems like mixing of water and extraction of cream, the unhygienic conditions in which the whole exercise is carried out is a matter of serious concern. Despite being aware of all this, the buyers have no choice but to depend on them, thanks to the high prices of packed milk. I plead with the authorities concerned to look into the problem and consider revision of prices for packed milk.
