THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lack of parking facilities, digging up of roads and encroachment of footpath by vendors were some of the issues highlighted by the representatives of various residents association as a part of Maithri, a community policing programme, held in the city on Sunday. The meetings held at Pattom and Thekkummoodu were attended by the representatives of over 100 residents associations coming under the Medical College and Museum police station limits. For the residents of Medical College Chalakkuzhi area, the frequent digging up of road on either side by private telephone companies have posed hardships to motorists and pedestrians alike. "We need a guideline from the authorities in carrying out such activities," demanded Shyam Prakash, a representative of the association to Sub Inspectors Santhosh Kumar V. and M. Sainalubdean who attended the function. He also pointed out that it has become a practice among ambulance drivers to park their vehicles blocking the entrance of the Chalakkuzhi road. Thekkummodu Sumesh A.K., convener, Maithri, wanted to know whether residents associations have any statutory powers in discharging its duties. "Law Minister M. Vijayakumar had once talked of empowering residents association with certain statutory powers. We need to know more about it," he said. Since some of the complaints raised by the residents at the meeting pertained to service departments such as electricity board and water authority, it was decided to include officials from these sectors in Maithri meetings from next month onwards. The association members also unanimously passed a resolution demanding Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran to take immediate steps to solve the water shortage in the area. The `Maithri' meeting held at Thekkumoodu, was attended by Somnatha Pillai, assistant commissioner, Cantonment and Sub Inspectors of Museum police station. Some of the complaints raised by the residents included unwillingness shown by auto-rickshaw drivers to commute to Vazhuthacad and Jagathy after 7 p.m.
