Flouting rules

Private vehicles such as auto rickshaws, cars and vans are been used for transporting children to school and back in different parts of city. In the wake of the boat tragedy at Thattekada, it is high time that the authorities checked the overcrowded travel of school children in such vehicles. Autos are seen carrying 12 kids at a time. Such vehicles should be seized and the drivers punished.

Shameful act

The report `Devotees caught in traffic snarls" (The Hindu, 04.03.07) was worth reading.

Even though a large number of police personnel were deployed to protect the devotees from anti-social elements, there were reports of anti-social activities taking place during the Pongala.

No doubt, police personnel alone can curb such tendencies. Under the pretext of serving drinking water youths created traffic jams.

Further, extortion in the name of `voluntary services' cannot be justified. Why is it that the youth do not show the same spirit of service they displayed only during the Pongala through out the year?

Commuters' woes

`The Hindu' dated 07.03.07 had published a beautiful photograph of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station.

In fact, in the name of modernisation, railway administration is doing away with basic amenities of common passengers as the second-class waiting room has been kept aside exclusively for reserved passengers.

During the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 2005, the public relations officer of Thiruvananthapuram division had assured through these columns that system of nominated platform for arrival and departure of trains and full roofing of platforms will be provided.

The Railways have totally neglected local passengers, as it is explicit from the overcrowding and late running of couple of passenger trains provided for thousands of prepaid daily commuters.

The authorities, while converting the Central Station into a world-class one, should not neglect ordinary passengers and daily commuters and provide adequate waiting space for them.
