This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru cast his vote at Allahabad on March 12. Arriving from Delhi by air, he drove to the Colonelganj polling station at 11.10 a.m., accompanied by Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Congress election chief, and Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Mr. Suvarna Shumsher, Nepal's Chief Election Commissioner, who is observing the election in India, was also present at the polling station when Mr. Nehru cast his vote. Seeing a big queue in front of the polling booth, Mr. Nehru asked the Presiding Officer, "Why have you stopped these people?" The Presiding Officer told him that they were waiting for their turn to cast their votes. After obtaining an identity slip from a polling clerk, Mr. Nehru stepped into the adjoining room where indelible ink was applied to his finger amidst the clicking of a battery of cameras. Mr. Nehru then handed over his identity slip to another clerk who gave him a ballot paper for the Vidhan Sabha. Mr. Nehru minutely examined the ballot paper and went into the polling booth to cast his vote. After casting his vote for the Lok Sabha also the Prime Minister drove back to Anand Bhavan.
