Corrections and Clarifications

  • The last sentence in the editorial "Connecting Asia" (March 10, 2007) was: "The fact that the Indian Railways and its subsidiaries can take on a significant part of the responsibility for implementing it will be a special

inventive." It should have been "special incentive."

  • The expansion of WBIDC is the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation, and not the West Bengal Development Corporation, as was stated in "Land lease deal signed for Singur car project" (Delhi editions, March 11, 2007).

  • The infobox in a report "Full cooperation given to CBI: Minister" (March 10, 2007, page 1) was: "CBI request on grounds of time bar". It should have been "CBI request declined on grounds of time bar", as stated in the text.

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report "PM asks more PSEs to get listed" ("Business" page, March 9, 2007) stated that the SCOPE Excellence Award 2004-05 in the institutional category was being presented to Steel Authority of India (SAIL). Another report in the same issue "SAIL, Power Grid lead SCOPE awards" gave it as the SCOPE Award for 2005-06. The Business Desk clarifies that the information in the caption is right. The award given to SAIL related to 2004-04, though awards for 2004-05 and 2005-06 were presented at the function.

  • In a report "Devices to preserve marine resources" ("Science & Technology" page, March 8, 2007), the fourth paragraph was "Amongst the various fish products exported by India to Japan, U.S and Western Europe shrimp remains a favourite." The shrimp belongs to the phylum Arthropoda and is a crustacean, and so the sentence should have been "Amongst the various marine products ... ."

  • A few sports page corrections and clarifications. In a report "Cummins to turn out for Canada" (Bangalore edition, March 4, 2007), it was stated that Anderson Cummins is the second player after Kepler Wessels to play for two countries at the World Cup. It should have been three as Graeme Hick too has represented two countries — Zimbabwe and England.

  • The fourth paragraph in a report "Emphatic victory for India" (March 10, 2007) stated that the West Indies is meeting Sri Lanka in the World Cup opener. The detail was incorrect in the Agency report. It is Pakistan versus the West Indies.

  • In the same paragraph, the sentence was: "West Indies takes on 1992 champion Sri Lanka in the World Cup opener ... ." It should have been 1992 champion Pakistan.

  • A hockey report "Three-year ban likely on players found guilty" (March 10, 2007) stated that Sher-e-Jalandhar lost the final 2-3 to Orissa Steelers. It was an error. Orissa Steelers beat Sher-e-Jalandhar 4-3 in the third and decisive final.

  • A report "Dravid picks Australia as slight favourite" (March 12, 2007) stated that India takes on Bangladesh in its first match on April 17. It should have been March 17, 2007. Another report in the same issue "`What Cann I do for you Mr. Tendulkar?" stated that the league match between India and Bermuda will be on April 19. It should have been March 19.

  • The report on the India-West Indies World Cup warm-up match (March 10, 2007) did not appear in the main sports page of the Kerala city editions (though there was a pointer in "Briefly", page 1 as "Nine-wicket win for India") because of a technical error.
