VTU files report on facilities in colleges

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday expressed serious concern over the plight of students studying in the four engineering colleges, which had been derecognised by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and sought to know from the authorities what action could be initiated against such institutions.

The court was dealing with an interlocutory application (IA) by VTU seeking modification of the February 21, 2007 order of the court directing the university to once again inspect the colleges and submit a report.

Placing the report before the court, the VTU said the four colleges — IMPACT, SIT and Nadiger, all of Bangalore and Socio-Economic Cultural Association of Bijapur (SECAB) of Bijapur — still lacked the basic facilities. It said the inspection was done in the light of the affidavit of the colleges.

When the matter came up, Justice Rammohan Reddy said one of the colleges — Nadiger — lacked infrastructure and sought to know from the VTU and others how the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) could permit such colleges to continue. The court said if any college did not have infrastructure it should be mentioned in the syllabus. This would ensure that students who opted for courses in these colleges were aware of the situation.

VTU sought modification of the interim order so that the students of the college could be shifted to other colleges.

Justice Rammohan Reddy then sought to know from the VTU and others whether there was a law for prosecuting such institutions.

The court adjourned further hearing on the issue to Tuesday.
