Media hype

In the past one week, the hottest event for the media has been the Elizabeth Hurley-Arun Nayar wedding. One wonders what is so exciting about two persons getting married. Why should the media be so obsessed with the wedding? One can understand the news generating excitement for a day or two because the persons involved are celebrities. But the day-to-day, details — "they are in Jodhpur, they are going to marry again in the Hindu style" — were a little too much. Why can't the media explain how inflation is going to hit the 25 per cent that is below the poverty line? The media's celebrity-obsession has an adverse impact on the young. They get enticed by the glamour and glitz little realising all that glitters is not gold.

Politicians and others decried racial discrimination when actor Shilpa Shetty was bullied on the Celebrity Big Brother Show. When we have a marriage that testifies to love transcending racial barriers, why not celebrate and rejoice over it? What is wrong with the media giving publicity to the Hurley-Nayar marriage?
