Hubli-Dharwad gets Rs. 12 crore special grant for projects

RIGHT BEGINNING: Officials with the copies of the Directory of Citizens Committees, which was released during the inauguration of Citizens Committees in Hubli on Monday.

HUBLI: A special grant of Rs. 12 crore has been released by the State Government to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation as promised for development of roads, drainage system, gardens and junctions, Jagadish Shettar, Revenue and district-in-charge Minister has said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Citizens Committees formed by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. The special grant was formally presented to the committees here on Monday.

Land allotment

Reiterating the commitment of the State Government for development of Hubli-Dharwad, the Minister said already the Government had approved allotment of 53 acres of land to IT companies for setting up their units. Very soon the land allotment papers would be handed over, he announced.

Hubli One

On the lines of "Bangalore One", where citizens get various facilities under a single roof, the State Government would be implementing "Hubli One" project, which should start functioning in two months, Shettar said.

The Government had released Rs. 50 lakh for developing the required infrastructure for the project, which was being implemented under the "E-Governance" project.

The Minister lauded the efforts of the corporation to involve citizens in the plans for development of the city.

The Minister hoped that the committees would help in solving the problems of the citizens and called on them to make the best of it.

Releasing the Directory of Citizens Committees, Basavaraj Horatti, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, termed the exercise as an attempt to make the citizens take care of other citizens. He also called on the members of the newly formed committees to retain the enthusiasm till the end. Commending the corporation for the good work done so far, Basavaraj Bommai, MLC, suggested that the committees should look into areas that have been so far untouched like corporation schools and hospitals.

Lagging behind

He said the corporation was lagging behind with regard to the cleanliness and hygiene aspects and needs to be addressed. Former Minister Jabbarkhan Honnalli underscored the need for uniform development in the twin cities.

B.S. Patil, former Chief Secretary, said the responsibility of ensuring comprehensive development of the twin cities was on the committees. A.M. Hindasageri, Former Minister, Narayan Nadamani, Police Commissioner also spoke.

654 Committees

Welcoming the gathering, Professor M.I. Savadatti, president of the Citizens Advisory Committee, said that a total of 654 citizens committees had been formed comprising of 5,176 members. The endeavour of involving the citizens in the governance was the first of its kind in the entire nation, he said.

Amita Prasad, Belgaum Divisional Commissioner, M.S. Srikar, Dharwad Deputy Commissioner, and others were present.

P. Manivannan, HDMC Commissioner, proposed the vote of thanks.
