NELLORE: With rumblings in the district Congress deepening further, the Congress high command is sending Endowments Minister J. C. Diwakar Reddy on a two-day fire-fighting mission on March 14 to broker a truce between warring factions. Despite Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's directive to party legislators to bury their differences and work for the victory of Congress official nominee for the Local Authorities' constituency C. V. Sesha Reddy, group rivalry in the district Congress continues to dog the party ahead of the Council elections. To prove this point, only 34 out of 61 elected representatives attended the party meeting, which was convened by Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasula Reddy and Kavali MLA Magunta Parvathamma at Kavali recently to introduce the party's official nominee to party leaders. On the other hand, much to the discomfort of the Congress, both Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have announced their support to Congress rebel Bommireddy Raghavendra Reddy, who has filed his nomination as an independent.
Assurance
And rumours are rife that the rebel candidate has already got assurance from more than 20 independents and a significant number of Congress leaders from Venkatagiri, Kavali, Atmakur, Sarvepalli, Udayagiri, Nellore and Rapur constituencies. Given this backdrop, the party high command had entrusted the responsibility of brokering a truce to the Endowments Minister, said a senior party leader.
