KOCHI: After nearly a decade in the top pack, Team MRF's rally star Karandip Singh has decided to retire from the sport. "I've had many nice years, wanted to get on with life... I've always wanted to leave on a high note and I felt the time has come," said the 32-year-old from Chandigarh on Monday. "I was very passionate about rallying but I would call it a hobby, not a profession." The Heera National Rally, which ended in Kochi on Sunday, was his last drive. Karandip was MRF's best driver in the MAI National Rally Championship last year, finishing third overall. He, and his navigator Jaidas Menon, also won the national championship in the 1600cc class last season. The two were overall runner-up in 2003 and the Group-N (stock cars) champions in 2000. "He was much faster than many Group A (modified) cars when we started out in Group N," said Jaidas Menon from Bangalore on Monday. "We've done nearly a hundred rallies together and he was always very creative, always wanted to do something new. I've learned a lot from him." Principal Correspondent
