THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Members of the Opposition on Monday walked out of the Assembly in protest against the failure to raise an adjournment motion on the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) question paper leak issue. K.C. Venugopal (Congress) who gave notice for the motion said the SSA question papers were found on the road at Kareelakulangara in Alappuzha district and Parappanangadi in Malappuram district. Since the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations were due on Wednesday, Mr. Venugopal sought an adjournment of the proceedings to discuss the question paper leak to allay the fears of the public about the conduct of the examinations. Education Minister M.A. Baby urged the ruling and Opposition members to discuss the issue with self-restraint. Till the last academic year, the SSA examinations were conducted by the headmasters of the respective schools. The State-level preparation and printing of question papers for the SSA examinations was introduced by the previous Government on the basis of expert opinion. Following complaints about the leak, the Government had ordered an inquiry into the incident and five persons were suspended from service. Steps had been taken to print new question papers and conduct the examinations in a time-bound manner, he said.

Mr. Baby also detailed the steps taken by the Government for the smooth conduct of the SSLC examinations. The question papers which were printed outside the State would be taken to the respective centres under police protection and before opening the covers, it would be endorsed by the students themselves. All these steps had been taken as per the directive of the High Court, he said.
